The Ingredient Blacklist

Posted on: February 2, 2010

Hi hi ladies,

I got a pretty good feedback from my readers, and it turns out that many of  you are beginners dealing with makeup and skin care  products. Most beginners tend to fall for marketing traps and purchase products because of the current trends, or they hear good things about a certain brand from others. But there are many ingredients sound nice and healthy for your skin, but actually impair your skin immune system or strip off your skin’s natural protective layer. You might not be able to notice right away, because it all happens underneath the skin surface, however years after you will see the irreversible damages.

So today I give you a list of irritating and inflamatory ingredients that fundamentally damage your skin. You want to avoid them when purchasing any beauty products (except fragrances). Watch out if the ingredients mentioned below appear at the beginning of an ingredient list.

  • Alcohol or SD-alcohol followed by a number. This does not include cetyl alcohol or stearyl alcohol (these two are standard, benign, waxlike cosmetic thickening afents and are completely nonirritating)
  • Camphor
  • Citrus juices and oils
  • Eucalyptus
  • Excessive fragrance
  • Menthol
  • Menthyl lactate
  • Menthoxypropanediol
  • Mint
  • Peppermint
  • Sodium Lauryl sulfate
  • Arnica
  • Bergamot
  • Cinnamon
  • Clove
  • Eugenol
  • Grapefruit (however yummy it may be as a fruit)
  • Lavender (yeah, can you believe it?)
  • Linalool
  • Wintergreen
  • Witch hazel
  • Ylang-ylang

Print it out in small fonts and put it in your wallet. Pull this list out when you decide to buy something beauty related. Remember, all the troubles you go through today will pay off years after.
